The Positive School Culture research project has invovled two studies to date:
Study one was a qualitative study which involved two types of data collection in England at school on the southcoast and in London:
Interviews - the researcher conducted five pilot interviews with Year 7 pupils, refined the interview approach, and then interviewed 17 Year 7 pupils for the main study in December 2021/January 2022 during the participants' first year of secondary school. The pupils talked about their positive experiences since moving school.
Journalling - participating pupils were invited to journal their positive school experiences via a Google Form link. A pilot study received 180 responses, the journalling procedure was adjusted, and the main study then received 482 responses. As with the interviews the data collection took place during the first year of secondary school in November/December 2021.
Survey design - The findings from the interviews and journalling were used to generate questions for a survey which would be used to collect data from a wider pool of pupils about Positive School Culture.
Study two was a quantitative study which involved a 36 question survey that was completed using a site called Qualtrics. 529 pupils from English schools in urban, rural, and coastal areas completed the survey between December 2023 and January 2024
